It is Wednesday again, so it's BUTTON DAY on my blog !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Today I show you the beautiful slate button art by Tom Stogdon. Tom was born in a London greengrocers family and started his sculpting career with fruit. He became frustrated with the ephemeral nature of fruit and also felt that people were not taking the work seriously and as a consequence started to explore other materials. He is now working with stone, metal, and sometimes plants, if there is no need for longevity. He writes: "Elements of the original construction process with fruit still have much significance in my work today. The pieces I make vary in size and stature, but each is made up of many smaller component parts, which are in turn wrestled into a larger containing space". Some of his smaller components are slate buttons, and that is how I found Tom's work. Have a look at his wonderful creations and imagine having your home and garden decorated by Tom's work; well you can always dream, isn't it ?

BUTTON ART with a big A of Augusto Esquivel. He says: I realize how insignificant and small a simple sewing button can be as it lays in my grandmother’s sewing box, but at the same time how unique and precious it can become as part of a work of art. Like an atom in a molecule, each button serves and shapes the whole. I hold the button to my ear and it whispers to me, “I want to be…..”
No more words needed, his art says it all !

Today I show you some fantastic button photographs I found on Flickr. The one above is by Fiona of wild goose chase; I love the soft focus and the text shining through the water drop.
And here the water turned into ice.... This photo is by Sam Turner; isn't it mysterious ?
In the next photo it looks if the buttons float on water; it's by Carlos Porto.
Here the buttons are disappearing in a black hole; photo by Alan of Sunset Sailor.
In this photo, the button itself looks like a black hole; photo by Neal Fowler.
And in this last photo, the buttons seem to stream away.....; photo by Cecilia Esbjornsson of Nifty loves crafting.

This week I found out about the work of German artist Georg Herold (born in 1947 in Jena). He creates very personal and meditative work, often ironic and critical, and uses mostly unusual materials like roof beams, bricks, buttons etc. The above button painting is a watercolor with buttons, thread, and shellac on primed canvas.
The next three paintings are oil paintings with buttons and thread on canvas.
And this last one is a collage of buttons and string on linen:
Although I like these paintings, I would love to know: Why buttons ?? Does Georg Herold want to send a message ? Like in much of his work ?
The pictures are from artvalue.com and Frieze Art Fair; and if you want to see more of his work, here's a video from a Georg Herold Retrospektive in Kärnten.
