Tidbits : Flickr Favourites

Living along the Schlei fjord and among fields which had grain in summer, we have sometimes problems with rats.... And now with the cold, they come very close to the house and one has definitely found a warm shelter under the roof above my bedroom, which we do not like so much. So we talk a lot these days about rats and how to get rid of them. This is not easy. As a biologist hubby does not want poison because they die a terrible death. So we first tried a kind of big mouse-trap with peanut butter; however, the peanut butter was gone and there was blood on the trap, which itself was meters away from the spot we put it. Hubby did not like this at all, saying it could have been something else as a rat too and it is there now in the cold bleeding. So, yesterday he bought a live rat catcher box. That one is standing now on the spot and when we catch something else as a rat it will be freed again, and when it is a rat, hubby will kill it himself and give it a very fast painless death (remember, he is a biologist).
So today's flickr favourites are all about rats .....

Tidbits : Flowers

OK, this was not my best week.... I was ill, had the flu, pretty heavy, and felt awful. Pretty sad about it, because I had great plans; sewing two skirts and new bags for the Xmas market. Nothing of all this. Hope next week will be better :)
But in between my bed and the toilet, I made some flowers for the Xmas market, I thought it would be a nice decoration of my stand, winter white flowers. And maybe I sell them too. Made them from old trevira fabric (a heritage from my mother), some wire and real tree branches. Looked from some beautiful worn ones in our wood stove burning wood stack. The flowers themselves can be changed in form, because of the wire sewn into them.

I only think that they will not be very suitable for Etsy, because the branches cannot be very long (German Post: 60x15x15 box is maximum) and although they weigh not much, it's still 6 Euro to send them abroad. I could cut the branches at about 45 cm, and I could see how much flowers I could get into the German Post norm, but where do I get cartons from that size ????

Etsy : New Business Cards

This week I did not do much, did not sew a thing, but got a good idea for the EST winter swap. So, that's what I will do next week, working on the winter swap. Back to this week, I did some necessary administration and was happy about the fact that Etsy transformed my P8Accessories shop from dollars into euros. And I got my new business cards and postcards for my P8 Button Art shop on Etsy ! I think they are fantastic, and will tell you the story a bit. Some time ago I got a lovely email from Stacey DeLooze that she liked my button creations and if she could use them for a photo-shooting of her UK based music band DeLooze. I listened to their music and liked the idea very much, wanted to see my creations in a completely different setting and we had a deal. And here's the result; I think they are extremely cool. Buy something in my Etsy shop and you get them in your own hands :))

Button Wednesday : Button Chairs

It is Wednesday again, so it's BUTTON DAY on my blog. It would be great if you could do the same; make your Wednesday a button day too. Have you seen a lovely, beautiful, stunning, crazy button or button-related thingy, or did you make something with a button / buttons, or did you even make buttons yourself, blog about it on your blog on Wednesday, and give the link here via Mister Linky at the end of this post.

Two weeks ago I blogged about button stools; so, today the button chair gets its turn. I am starting with some Curious Objects from curious artist Dianne Vetromile; Dianne's work is funky and very imaginative, and she recycles everything you can imagine. I love her button chairs the most :)

And I fell in love with this "Button-land" chair from Australian artist Adelle, created with acrylic paint, buttons and a mini children's chair rescued from hard rubbish; it's the most lovely and playful thing you can imagine.

Then I found a very unique button chair created in 1998 as a tribute to all women – as well as their families, friends and support networks – who have battled breast cancer in North Carolina. Every button represents a unique story of courage and strength, each having belonged to a breast cancer survivor or someone who lost their battle with the disease.

And I found a beautiful upcycling idea for a medallion chair at Casa Sugar, turning this proper piece of furniture into a very personal chair.

And at the end of this blogpost, a compilation of button chairs found on Flickr.

Traditional Costumes : Japanese Drapes

Sleeveless Samurai Woman Iota
This week I finished two Samurai drapes in small sizes and in wool. I fiddled so long with the Japanese pattern to make it really nice fitting for a European size S/M. The black and white checkered one is from a pretty thick tweed wool I bought some years ago in Edinburgh (when we lived there); it has turned out much nicer than I thought, because I was first afraid it would be too stiff. But it drapes gorgeously, like a thick winter scarf. The other one is from a lovely purple striped wool fabric, much thinner and suppler than the tweed one. So, this one is a more flexible drape.
Sleeveless Samurai Woman Kappa
My lovely friend Anne is modelling them here, and she looks great in them ! They are for sale in my P8Accessories etsy shop ! Will also start to make some more in sizes L and XL.

Button Wednesday : 2 or 4 holes or not ?

It is Wednesday again, so it's BUTTON DAY on my blog. It would be great if you could do the same; make your Wednesday a button day too. Have you seen a lovely, beautiful, stunning, crazy button or button-related thingy, or did you make something with a button / buttons, or did you even make buttons yourself, blog about it on your blog on Wednesday, and give the link here via Mister Linky at the end of this post.

I am always looking for buttons that have something special, for example not the usual 2 or 4 holes. When I saw these so called ABC buttons, I was thrilled. This ABC button has nine holes ! This enables you to sew it on with every letter and number you want.

And it inspired Steve Hoefer and Derek & Lauren to make some of their own. Moreover, they give you ample instructions to make your own !

It's a pity that I do not have a 9-hole button yet, but I have other peculiarities; 3, 5, 4 in a row, 6, 16 holes. The first four buttons in the mosaic below are intended to have 3 holes (the metal one is a very old military button); the fifth button is a printing mistake. The seventh one is from wood, and I have no idea if it is a real button, but when I found it, it was sewn on as a button. The eight one I got from Kreativlink and the nineth one looks pretty old.

Bags : Tiny Baskets

This week I finished six tiny baskets with traditional costume couples from The Netherlands. I found these tiny cross stitch patterns in a vintage embroidery book and I loved them. When I was a teenager (ahum, pretty long time ago) I had my legs several times in plaster (don't ask, but I was a fanatic sporter), and it is from that time on that I started to make cross stitch embroideries. I think I did not make any cross stitch anymore in the last 20 years or so, but when I saw these charming couples in folk dress, I had to make them.

And then I bought this gorgeous vintage linen tablecloth on a flea market in the nearby town, beautifully coarse and stiff. Perfect for making baskets. I lined them with remnants of an old fabric I bought once in Staphorst (must be at least 30 years old); I bought lots of this fabric back then to make me bed clothes from it. So, the whole set has a real vintage and traditional flair.

And they are for sale in my P8Accessories etsy shop ! There are more little baskets in the make .....

Etsy : Earrings

This week's earrings are very special, because I always feel very special when I wear them and I only wear them on special occasions. They are from EST member PamelaAngus, who makes the most fantastic glass creations. It was the third pair of earrings I bought on Etsy (February 2008). They look stunning when the light falls through and the particles look to swim. I wear these earrings with every possible colour, because they adapt themselves according to my outfit. Real festive earrings !

Button Wednesday : Button Stools

It is Wednesday again, so it's BUTTON DAY on my blog. It would be great if you could do the same; make your Wednesday a button day too. Have you seen a lovely, beautiful, stunning, crazy button or button-related thingy, or did you make something with a button / buttons, or did you even make buttons yourself, blog about it on your blog on Wednesday, and give the link here via Mister Linky at the end of this post.

This Button Wednesday is about button stools. The form of a stool is probably very inspiring for button lovers. I found quite a few fantastic designs !
The stool above is the "Button Stool" by Josef Frank, a great Swedish designer who died in 1967. Svenskt Tenn, an interior design shop located in Stockholm, has brought this "new" little stool in production again.

Spanish designers macalula created the above "buttom stool". The button hole perforations in the seat make for a perfect outdoor stool, allowing water to pass through, keeping the seat dry.

The next "button stools" above are from Karina Clarke Designs in Australia. She says:'The seat is representative of a button and the frame is like the thread connecting the two together.'

And these cute little wooden "button stools" are by ippei takei from Japan.

And last, but certainly not least, these funky button stool and bench from Ogata Works Original Furniture in Japan.
