After the Marken costume, today it's the turn of the traditional costume of Volendam in The Netherlands. Volendam is only 5 kilometers (3 miles) away from Marken, but the costumes are very different. The costume in Volendam is not as old as the one in Marken, they never valued old garment pieces as they did in Marken, and buy rather new pieces when the old is not nice anymore. A big difference in mentality, also maintained by a different religion (catholic versus protestant). A cute detail is that the underskirt in Marken is the outerskirt in Volendam; the Marken people consider the Volendam people to walk around in their underwear. The Volendam costume is very spectacular with its colours and lace winged cap; it's also seen by many foreigners as the Dutch national costume, which it is not of course.
lovely pics.
ReplyDeleteNo, it isn't the national costume. Haven't seen one Limburger wearing anything like that in the years since I live here...
Do you see all the big beads of red coral the women have around their necks? Lovely shade of orange/red
