1. marken, 2. Klederdracht Detail, 3. Marker klederdracht / Traditional Dutch costume, 4. [Native girls, Marken Island, Holland] (LOC)
And two pictures from my own collection. The first picture shows a chintz girl's cap from Marken. The second one shows a postcard depicting a girl from Marken from around 1910. Personally, I think the Marken costume is the most prettiest one of all Dutch costumes.
What? This is a cap from a traditional dress from the Netherlands? So, they used traditional wax batik fabric from Java! I was never aware of this.
ReplyDeleteTraditional costumes are always so interesting as they reflect much more than modern costumes.
ReplyDeleteI love the costumes!
ReplyDeleteAnd I so like to see those vintage postcards you have in your shop!
Nauli: The original chintz fabrics were brought by the merchants of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) from India and Indonesia to the Netherlands during the 17th and early 18th century. After that, the Dutch started to copy these fabrics and produced them in Holland. They were very fashionable in that time and survived after that as little pieces in some of the traditional costumes. The small pieces of Chintz in the Marken costume are inherited from generation to generation as real treasures, so most of them you see today are very very old.
ReplyDeleteYou can ceratinly see colonial influence.
ReplyDeleteGreat mosaic!
ReplyDeleteI thinks it's quite up to date if you see the mix of materials, prints and colors ... I can see where designers get their inspiration.
